The Nurse’s Song (She’s Gotta Run)

I’m a nurse on the run in Nola, worked in Sierra Leone
Never ran from Ebola
My career is disease but I never did flee
And now, I’m thinking, “What’s wrong with me?”
For release, my feet pound the streets
While released tears pound my cheeks
And yeah, yeah, I gotta run

Reuse the gown, now I’m running out of masks
As I balance human lives, not just completing tasks
It’s harder than it sounds
But I fall into their eyes
When I make the rounds
But what can I do when the president says
“It’s a hoax, a cold, a flu,” yeah, I gotta run

The most difficult thing is witnessing death all alone
It stomps my eyes
In bed at home, I tell myself
“Just do your job and go down the list"
But what can I do
When we’re burying foreheads without one last kiss
How did we get here? How did we end up like this? I gotta run

Well, thanks to my loved ones for keeping me fed
And thanks to my partner
For kissing my forehead
Saying, “We’ve made it this far
We’ll make it out alive. You were born to survive.”
I’ll reuse my PPE to get close to your loved ones
Keep away from me - I gotta run

Well, I should get tested but think of the cost
Can my mind be healthy
If I’m financially lost
It seems silly to think about right now
Thinking long term, past this disease
Oh never mind, a patient’s at the door
Running out of gear, and not getting more - yeah, I gotta run

If it makes it any easier for you to see
Then call me a hero and then you thank me
But when the dust settles, more importantly
Forget all about your business degree
And get in the business of helping me
Save more lives and being ready
Put your money where your mouth is - yeah, I gotta run

Well, looking back on Mardi Gras
Masquerade parties, costumes, euphoria
What we know now, what we didn’t know then
If we could do it all over
Would we do it again
Well, here’s to the future, and we’ll call it by name
But something tells me it just won’t be the same - yeah, I gotta run
